Our Purpose, Vision, and Approach and Why It Matters For Lubricant Container Recycling

Rising social awareness around plastic waste, driven by media coverage and increased research, is making consumers and regulators more interested in immediate action to help solve the plastic waste problem.

In the last few decades, the US has experienced significant growth in the total production of passenger cars and commercial vehicles, including trucks and buses. This rise in production has led to higher consumption of maintenance products, such as lubricant oil, and therefore more containers disposed of in landfills. This expansion puts pressure on the already difficult problem of waste disposal as it increases the quantity of hazardous waste and materials of difficult degradation being disposed of in landfills.

Key stakeholders in the lubricant supply chain must be part of the solution to address the problem or run the risk of being perceived as contributing to it. Taking action to develop solutions to recover and recycle plastic material is becoming necessary for companies to maintain reputational value and, at the same time, align efforts towards more sustainable products.

The National Lubricant Recycling Coalition (NLCRC) is an industry-led technical coalition that brings brands and value chain participants together in an equal partnership to create and inspire a well-defined, sustainable, and economically driven solution to the recycling of hard-to-degrade lubricant packaging within the US.

The Coalition is working towards establishing a program that recovers and recycles plastic packaging used to transport lubricants for commercial and consumer use.

To deliver impactful solutions and accelerate the transition to a post-consumer recovery and recycling, the Coalition is leading a program that seeks to cover hard-to-degrade plastics disposal and recycling management gaps existent across the US.

Our current NLCRC members consist of lubricant manufacturers and associated plastic packaging manufacturers in the United States. We engage with multiple professionals including business category managers, procurement professionals, packaging services, sustainability practitioners, marketing and sales, and communications.

From industries to households, everyone has an essential role in reducing the lubricant container waste problem in the US. By being part of the NLCRC, companies can achieve a measurable, positive impact on environmental and social drivers for plastic waste prevention that can be leveraged as a member.

Our founding leaders include Castrol, Valvoline, Pennzoil - Quaker State Company, Graham Packaging, and Plastipak Packaging. Learn how the NLCRC is addressing the waste problem by becoming a member.
